Women's Health

Soyfoods hold special appeal for postmenopausal women because they are uniquely rich sources of isoflavones.1Isoflavones are classified as phytoestrogens,although they differ from the hormone estrogen at the molecular and clinical levels.2Clinicalwork shows isoflavones alleviate hot flash frequency and severity significantly more than a placebo.3Isoflavones also improve endothelial function,thereby helping reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.4Intriguingevidence indicates that isoflavones can improve skin health as well,including reducing wrinkles.5Although clinical studies evaluating the skeletal 澳门金莎国际s have produced mixed results,at the very least,many soyfoods are good sourcesof calcium and vitamin D.Additionally,research shows that breast cancer survivors can safely consume soyfoods and their prognosis may actually be improved by doing so.6Download Soy Connection'sSoy & Women'sHealth brochureto learn more.

Men's Health

Soyfoods provide high-quality protein to help meet dietary needs,,1and soy protein modestly lowers blood cholesterol levels.2Soy protein also leads to gains in muscle mass and strength in men undergoing resistance exercisetraining to a similar extent as whey protein.3Observational data shows that soy intake is associated with a reduced risk of developing prostate cancer as well.4Although soyfoods contain isoflavones,which are classifiedas phytoestrogens,evidence shows that soy does not feminize men.In clinical studies,soy does not lower circulating levels of testosterone,,5raise estrogen levels6or adversely affect sperm or semen metrics.7,8DownloadSoy Connection'sSoy & Men's Health brochureto learn more.

Children's Health

Soyfoods are nutritious additions to children's diets.They provide high-quality protein without the saturated fat typically present in other commonly consumed sources of protein.1In fact,studies show children find soyfoods asacceptable as their non-soy counterparts.2-4Furthermore,as in adults,soy protein lowers blood cholesterol levels in children.5-9Intriguing evidence also indicates that consuming just one serving of soy during childhoodand/or adolescence markedly reduces breast cancer risk later in life.2-4Concerns that soyfoods might adversely affect development are contradicted by studies showing that soy does not affect menses onset in girls10andpuberty onset for boys who consume high amounts of soy falls well within the normal age range.11Download Soy Connection'sSoy & Children's Health brochuretolearn more.

Myths & Facts

Soyfoods have been the subject of considerable misinformation and even disinformation.Many myths exist about the health effects of soyfoods.For example,extensive clinical data shows soyfoods do not feminize men,as is sometimes claimed.1,2Concerns that soyfoods are harmful to breast cancer survivors are contrary to the positions of the American Cancer Society,,3American Institute for Cancer Research4,and the World Cancer Research Fund.5Clinical studieshave also shown that soy does not cause thyroid problems,,6a conclusion recently reached by the European Food Safety Authority.7Even discussions about the prevalence of soy allergy are often misinformed.Approximately one outof every 1,000 adults is allergic to soy protein,which is much less than the prevalence of milk and peanut allergies.8Download Soy Connection'sSoy Myths & Facts brochureto learn more.

Heart Health

Soyfoods can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease through multiple mechanisms.Soy protein directly lowers blood cholesterol levels,an effect formally recognized by the USDA.1The soybean is also rich in polyunsaturated fat,providing ample amounts of both essential fatty acids: the omega-6 fatty acid,linoleic acid,and omega-3 fatty acid,alpha-linolenic acid.2When soyfoods replace common sources of protein in the U.S.diet,bloodcholesterol levels are further reduced because of the beneficial change in fatty acid intake.3Unsaturated fat also favorably affects other processes to further reduce the cause of coronary heart disease such as cholesterol effluxcapacity.4Finally,the isoflavones in soybeans improve endothelial function5,6and reduce arterial stiffness.7Soyfoods warrant inclusion in heart-healthy diets.Download Soy Connection'sSoy & Heart Health brochureto learn more.

Breast Cancer

Observational studies in the Asia-Pacific region show soyfood intake is associated with a reduction in breast cancer risk.1However,several lines of evidence support the hypothesis that consumption must occur early in life for soy toreduce risk.In fact,epidemiologic studies have found that consuming approximately one serving of a soyfood during childhood and/or adolescence reduces risk by as much as 60 percent.2Concerns that soyfoods are contraindicated forbreast cancer survivors are based on studies in rodents and are not supported by research involving both healthy women and women with breast cancer.Clinical studies show that even large amounts of soy do not adversely affect markers of breast cancerrisk,including mammographic density3and breast cell proliferation.4-9Furthermore,prospective epidemiologic studies involving over 11,000 breast cancer survivors show that post-diagnosis soy intake is associatedwith a statistically significant reduction in recurrence and mortality.10Download Soy Connection'sSoy & Breast Cancer Health brochuretolearn more.
